DEXA vs. Bod Pod

The Bod Pod estimates body composition from air displacement, a two-compartment model that reports fat and fat-free mass only. DEXA measures fat, lean tissue, and bone directly, adds visceral fat and region-by-region detail, and is generally regarded as the reference standard. Both are legitimate; DEXA simply measures more, in more detail.

The Bod Pod is a real, validated method, not a gimmick like a bathroom scale. But it measures less than a DEXA scan, and understanding the difference helps you choose.

How each one works. You sit inside the Bod Pod, an egg-shaped chamber, and it measures your body volume by how much air you displace; from volume and weight it calculates body density and estimates your fat and fat-free mass. A DEXA scan passes low-dose X-ray beams through your body and measures how fat, lean tissue, and bone each absorb them, measuring the compartments directly rather than inferring them from density.

What each measures: the key difference. This is where they diverge most. The Bod Pod uses a two-compartment model: it reports total fat mass and fat-free mass, and nothing more. It cannot tell you where fat or muscle sits, cannot measure visceral fat, and cannot assess bone density. DEXA reports fat and lean mass region by region (each arm, each leg, the trunk, left versus right), plus visceral fat and bone density, from the same single scan. If you want to know not just how much fat and muscle you have but where, and how your bones are doing, that’s DEXA.

Accuracy. Both are respectable. The Bod Pod’s error for body fat is roughly 2 to 4%, and it correlates well with DEXA for total body fat. DEXA’s error for body fat is roughly 1 to 2%, and it’s widely treated as the reference standard for body composition. One subtlety worth knowing: the Bod Pod assumes a fixed density for fat-free mass, an assumption that’s less accurate for athletes, older adults, and across different body types, which can widen its error for exactly the people who most want precise measurement.

Radiation and comfort. The Bod Pod uses no radiation at all, which is a genuine point in its favor. A DEXA scan uses a very low dose (roughly 1 to 5 µSv, a small fraction of a chest X-ray), but if avoiding any radiation is a priority, the Bod Pod avoids it entirely. On comfort, DEXA is an open table while the Bod Pod is an enclosed chamber, which some people find less comfortable.

Which is right for you. If you want a quick estimate of total body fat and don’t need regional detail, visceral fat, or bone density, the Bod Pod does that. If you want the fuller, more detailed, reference-standard picture (where your fat and muscle sit, your visceral fat, and your bone density, all from one scan), DEXA measures considerably more.

Common questions

Is DEXA or the Bod Pod more accurate?

Both are respectable. DEXA's body-fat error is roughly 1–2% and it's treated as the reference standard; the Bod Pod's is roughly 2–4%. DEXA also measures more: regional detail, visceral fat, and bone density that the Bod Pod can't.

What can't the Bod Pod measure?

It's a two-compartment model, so it reports only total fat and fat-free mass. It can't show where fat or muscle sits, can't measure visceral fat, and can't assess bone density, all of which DEXA does.

Does the Bod Pod use radiation?
