The technology behind your scan
Every scan at Wayne DEXA is performed on the GE Lunar Prodigy, a clinical dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry system. It’s the same class of equipment used in hospitals and research — not a portable estimate tool — and it measures your body fat, lean muscle, visceral fat, and bone density directly, with the precision needed to track real change over time.
A clinical DXA platform
The GE Lunar Prodigy is a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanner running GE’s enCORE software. DXA is the clinical reference standard for measuring both bone density and body composition, and the Prodigy is a fixed, professional-grade system — the kind of equipment you’d find in a hospital radiology department or a research lab, rather than the portable bioimpedance devices or mobile units used for quick estimates.
Because it’s the same platform used in clinical studies, your results are measured the way the research defines them.
What it measures
A single scan separates your body into fat, lean tissue, and bone, and reports each both for your whole body and region by region — arms, legs, trunk, and left versus right.
Beyond the totals, the Prodigy’s enCORE software includes: CoreScan, which estimates visceral adipose tissue (VAT) — the metabolically active fat stored deep around your abdominal organs — as mass, volume, and area; regional and android/gynoid analysis, which shows where fat and muscle sit and how symmetrical you are side to side; and appendicular lean mass and skeletal muscle indices, the measures used clinically to assess muscle adequacy.
On the bone side, it measures bone mineral density at the spine, hip, and forearm, and includes FRAX, which estimates your 10-year fracture risk from your bone density and personal risk factors.
Precision you can track over time
A measurement is only useful for tracking change if it’s precise enough that a real difference stands out from measurement noise. Published precision for GE Lunar DXA systems is approximately 1% for total-body bone mineral density and around 1% for total-body fat and lean mass, meaning a follow-up scan can distinguish a genuine change from ordinary variation.
Regional and visceral measurements — like the android area where visceral fat is assessed — remain highly reproducible, though with slightly wider variation than whole-body figures, which is why we focus on trends over time rather than reading too much into any single regional number.
As we complete our accreditation, we will establish our own on-site precision so your results are interpreted against this specific scanner.
Built-in quality control
Consistent results depend on a consistent instrument. The Prodigy runs quality-assurance calibration checks to confirm the scanner is measuring accurately before patients are scanned, and its ScanCheck feature automatically reviews each scan for acquisition or positioning issues that could affect your results.
Combined with a physician reading every scan, this means your measurement is checked at both the machine and the clinical level.
Low-dose by design
A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of radiation. A scan on our GE Lunar Prodigy delivers an effective dose of roughly 1 to 5 µSv — comparable to about 3 to 15 hours of the natural background radiation everyone is exposed to in daily life, several times less than a transatlantic flight, and a small fraction of a standard chest X-ray.
The Prodigy also offers reduced-dose scan modes. As a routine precaution, scans are not performed during pregnancy.
