Visceral Fat and Metabolic Health in Men

A man can have a normal weight, a normal BMI, and still be carrying the kind of fat that matters most for his health. That’s the case for measuring it directly.
Why visceral fat is the number that matters. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is the fat stored deep in the abdomen around the organs. It’s metabolically active, and it’s strongly associated with cardiometabolic risk, and importantly, that association holds independent of BMI. In one large study, DXA-measured visceral fat showed a near-linear association with future cardiovascular events in middle-aged adults. Men, on average, carry substantially more visceral fat than women.
Why the scale and BMI miss it. BMI and body weight can’t distinguish visceral fat from subcutaneous fat or from muscle. Two men at the same weight can have very different amounts of the fat that actually raises risk. Visceral fat is invisible to a scale, a mirror, and a tape measure alone, which is exactly why measuring it is worthwhile.
What DEXA does. A DEXA scan estimates visceral fat directly and reports it alongside total and regional fat, lean mass, and bone density, a complete picture from one short, low-dose scan. Tracked over time, it shows whether changes to diet, activity, or treatment are actually reducing the fat that matters.

Can I have too much visceral fat at a normal weight?

How does DEXA measure visceral fat?
It estimates the visceral fat in the abdomen and reports it alongside total and regional body composition and bone density. This is something InBody can't do: it estimates from impedance, while DXA measures the visceral region directly.
